Scientific expert symposium

Scientific expert symposium to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the fall of Promina to the Ottomans

The municipality of Promina, in cooperation with the Public Institute of Krka National Park, State Archives in Šibenik, Drniš Museum and the Drniš branch of Matrix Croatica organized a scientific expert symposium to mark the 500th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALL OF PROMINA TO THE OTTOMANS, to be held on 27 May at the Krka Eco Campus in Puljane..

On 28 May 1522, Promina fell into the hands of the Turks, causing a massive exodus of the population towards the west. In doing so, they found a new home at Oklaj, and raised the Bandalović Kula tower as a defensive tower to control the surrounding roads and the town of Šušelj in Lukara in defence against the Venetians, Morlachs (Venetian irregulars) and Uskoks (inland irregular soldiers). Nečven was the seat of the Nečven municipality, which encompassed present day Promina, and for a time it was also the seat of the Zakrčje Sanjak (administrative unit), until the seat was moved to Knin. The local population put up a great fight against the Turks, and many losses were had in that period. In 1688, Promina was finally freed from the Turks.

Presentations will be given by about ten experts and scientists, archaeologists, historians and museum experts, and part of the programme will be dedicated to the children at the Antun Mihanović Petropoljski District School in Oklaj, where a small archaeology class will also be held.

The scientific expert symposium on the Ottoman conquests will be held as part of the project “Unknown Krka – hidden treasures of the upper and middle course of the Krka River”.
