Volunteer programme “Krka riverbank cleaner”

Volunteer programme “Krka riverbank cleaner”

From 22–31 August 2022, a volunteer programme entitled “Krka riverbank cleaner” was held at Krka National Park. The programme included the following activities:

  • Collection and analysis of waste washed up along the banks of the Krka and Čikola Rivers in the territory of Krka National Park
  • Determination of the origin of the waste and the consequences it has on the environment
  • Presenting the results to the local population with the aim of raising awareness about how we treat the environment.

The collected waste was sorted by type of waste and location of collection: plastic, paper and cardboard, glass, metal, rubber, tires, textile and footwear, waste electric and electronic equipment (OEEO), and other. Due to the location where it was located (near the water), most of the waste was wet and/or dirty from earth and sand.

As part of the volunteer programme, on 25 August volunteers went on a study trip to the Šibenik-Knin County waste management centre d.o.o. and to the Research station of the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Šibenik. They also visited the Ecological-Information Centre in Knin where they presented the first results and impressions of the programme, and exchanged experiences with members of the Krka Ecological Society in Knin.

The volunteer programme is a step forward in validating the Krka Eco-Campus in Puljani. It will facilitate the development of volunteer activities in the park area and nature protection in general, making it possible for interested individuals to get involved in activities in the protected area.
